Continuing Medical Education

In 1980, a group of local physicians determined there was a need for a women's hospital to serve the needs of women in the Lafayette community. The Woman's Foundation, Inc. (WFI) was created to manage the land and oversee the construction of the hospital. The Foundation contracted with Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) to build the hospital and subsequently operate the facility. Today, that facility is known as Women's & Children's Hospital. Once the hospital was completed in 1983, WFI entered into a 99 year agreement with HCA to lease the property. The lease payments from the hospital provide the operating funds for the Foundation.

In 1984, the Foundation began sponsoring continuing medical education activities for physicians on health issues affecting women and their families. The Foundation is accredited by the Louisiana State Medical Society (LSMS) as an approved provider of continuing medical education (CME) programs for Louisiana physicians.

The vision of the CME program is to develop quality continuing medical education activities that provide physicians with information, techniques and modalities to improve patient care.

The CME purpose is to:

  • To provide continuing medical education activities which will increase the knowledge, skills and competence of Louisiana physicians
  • To provide physicians with an opportunity to receive quality CME which will help update them on recent developments in medicine as identified by educational needs
  • To jointly sponsor CME activities with other organizations which will help enhance opportunities to provide quality CME
  • To collaborate with other community leaders and organizations to continue to seek avenues for maintaining a well-informed and educated physician community
  • To meet or exceed the Essential Areas and Policies of the Louisiana State Medical Society (LSMS) Accreditation Program
The general types of activities conducted by WFI include conferences, lectures, recurring CME activities, and journal club.
