With childhood obesity rate in Louisiana reaching "epidemic" proportions, an unprecedented collaboration of community partners in Acadiana teamed up to create and implement "Kids on the Geaux", a comprehensive pediatric weight management program.

The mission of the program is to provide improved health, fitness and education for children at risk for complications of obesity. Through partnerships with community resources nutritional education, fitness education and behavior education is offered in a twelve week program.

The program is for overweight children, ages 8 through 14 and their families who are interested in losing weight and learning healthier lifestyle habits. Children will need appropriate referrals from their primary care physician to participate in the program. Parents will need to accompany and participate in the program with their children.

The 12-week sessions will be held at Woman's Foundation involving 45 minutes of nutritional and behavioral education and 45 minutes of exercise, both aerobic and strength training. During the initial few sessions, information such as weight, height, and blood pressure will be gathered on each participant. Information about current dietary and exercise habits will be gathered as well.
